Educational Qualification
To be eligible for UPSC ESE Recruitment, candidates must meet one of the following educational qualifications:
- Possess a degree in Engineering from a University incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other Educational Institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as Universities under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.
- Have successfully passed Sections A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India).
- Hold a degree or diploma in Engineering from a foreign University/College/Institution, under conditions recognized by the Government for this purpose, as may be determined from time to time.
- Have passed the Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India).
- Have passed the Associate Membership Examination Parts II and III/Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India.
- Have successfully completed the Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London, conducted after November 1959.
- Please note that candidates applying for the positions of Indian Naval Armament Service (Electronics Engineering Posts) and Indian Radio Regulatory Service Group ‘A’ may possess any of the qualifications mentioned above or the specific qualifications outlined below:

Physical Standard
- To be eligible for the Engineering Services Examination, candidates must satisfy the physical requirements as specified in the Rules for the Engineering Services Examination.
Selection Process
The selection process for UPSC ESE consists of three main stages, and candidates must successfully pass each stage to be ultimately selected.
- Stage-I: Engineering Services (Preliminary/Stage-I) Examination:
This stage involves Objective Type Papers.
The examination is conducted to shortlist candidates for the next stage.
- Stage-II: Engineering Services (Main/Stage-II) Examination:
This stage includes Conventional Type Papers.
Candidates who pass Stage-I move on to Stage-II for further evaluation.
- Stage-III: Personality Test:
In this stage, candidates go through a Personality Test.
The final selection is based on the performance in this stage and the previous examination stages.
Exam Pattern
- Stage-1 (Preliminary Examination)
The examination will consist of two papers. Paper 1- will be of 200 marks and Paper 2- will be of 300 marks.
