About This Course

The Intelligence Bureau (IB) is India’s internal security and counterintelligence agency, established in 1887. It operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs and is responsible for domestic intelligence and internal security. The IB’s primary functions include:

• Gathering intelligence within India.
• Counterterrorism operations.
• Counterintelligence activities.
• VIP security and threat assessment.
• Monitoring sensitive areas and issues.

The IB has a rich history and has played a significant role in India’s internal security. It is one of the oldest intelligence agencies in the world and has been involved in various critical operations to safeguard the nation.

Criteria to Join IB as ACIO

• Nationality: Must be an Indian citizen.
• Educational Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university with a minimum of 50% marks.

Knowledge of computers is desirable.

• Age Limit:

Between 18 and 27 years.

Age relaxation is provided as per government rules (e.g., SC/ST: 5 years, OBC: 3 years).

• Experience: Field experience in intelligence work is desirable.
• Physical Fitness: Candidates must demonstrate excellent physical and mental fitness.

Recruitment Pathways

• IB ACIO Exam: The most common route to join IB is through the Intelligence Bureau Assistant Central Intelligence Officer (ACIO) exam conducted by the Ministry of Home Affairs. This exam is held annually at the national level and includes three stages: Tier-I (objective test), Tier-II (descriptive test), and an interview.
• Direct Recruitment: For specialized roles, IB occasionally recruits directly from universities and other institutions.

Exam Details

Criteria to Join IB as JIO

• Nationality: Must be an Indian citizen.
• Educational Qualifications:

A Diploma in Engineering or a Bachelor’s Degree in Science with specific specializations, or a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Applications from a recognized university/institute.

• Age Limit:

Between 18 and 27 years.

Age relaxation is provided as per government rules:

OBC: 3 years.

SC/ST: 5 years.

• Experience: No prior experience is required.
• Physical Fitness: Candidates must demonstrate excellent physical and mental fitness.
• Background Checks: Candidates must have a clean legal record, free of any criminal background or pending court cases.

Criteria to Join IB as Security Assistant

• Nationality: Must be an Indian citizen.
• Educational Qualifications:

Must have passed the 10th class examination or equivalent from a recognized board.

Possession of a domicile certificate of the state against which the candidate has applied.

Possession of a valid driving license for motor cars (LMV) issued by the competent authority.

Knowledge of motor mechanism (the candidate should be able to remove minor defects in the vehicle).

• Age Limit:

Minimum Age: 18 years.

Maximum Age: 27 years.

Age relaxation is provided as per government rules:

SC/ST: 5 years.

OBC: 3 years.

• Experience:

Field experience in intelligence work is desirable but not mandatory.

Experience of driving a motor car for at least one year after obtaining a valid driving license.

• Language Proficiency:

Candidates must be fluent in writing and speaking skills in one of the local languages of the state they are applying for.

Recruitment Pathways

IB Security Assistant Exam: The most common route to join IB is through the Intelligence Bureau Security Assistant (SA) exam conducted by the Ministry of Home Affairs. This exam includes multiple stages:

• Tier-I: Objectivetype multiplechoice questions.
• Tier-II: Descriptivetype paper.
• Tier-III: Interview/Personality test.

Tier 1  Written Exam Marks Description

• General Awareness: Questions about current events, history, geography, politics, economics, and more.
• Quantitative Aptitude: Mathematical problems covering topics like arithmetic, number series, time and work, and speed, time, distance.
• Logical Reasoning: Problems related to reasoning, puzzles, analogies, number series, and figurebased questions.
• English Language: Comprehension, sentence correction, synonyms/antonyms, vocabulary, and grammarrelated questions.

Each subject typically carries a certain weightage, which contributes to the total 100 marks.

Tier 2  Skill / Regional Language Test

• This test assesses candidates’ proficiency in the local language (if applicable). It is usually a qualifying test, meaning it is required for clearing the process but doesn’t contribute to the final marks calculation.

Tier 3  Interview & Medical Test

• Interview: It is more of a personality and suitability assessment rather than a strictly scored exam. However, candidates who perform poorly in the interview can be disqualified.
• Medical Test: No marks are assigned, but it is a crucial step in confirming the candidate’s physical fitness.

In this setup, Tier 1 (Written Exam) holds the major weightage, and Tier 2 and Tier 3 serve as qualifying rounds.

Criteria to Join IB as Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS)

• Nationality: Must be an Indian citizen.
• Educational Qualifications:

Must have passed the 10th class examination or equivalent from a recognized board.

Possession of a domicile certificate of the state against which the candidate has applied.

• Age Limit:

Minimum Age: 18 years.

Maximum Age: 25 years.

• Age relaxation is provided as per government rules:

SC/ST: 5 years.

OBC: 3 years.

PwD: 10 years.

ExServicemen: As per government rules.

Widows, Divorced Women, and Women Judicially Separated from Their Husbands and Not Remarried: Up to 35 years (General) and 40 years (SC/ST).

• Logical Reasoning (20-25 marks): Includes puzzles, analogies, figure based reasoning, syllogism, etc.
• English Language (15-20 marks): Includes questions on grammar, comprehension, sentence correction, synonyms, and antonyms.

Interview & Document Verification Marks Description

• Interview: The interview stage helps assess the candidate’s personality and suitability for the role. It does not carry fixed marks but is essential for final selection.
• Document Verification: This is to check the authenticity of the documents submitted by candidates. It is mandatory but does not contribute any marks.
• Medical Examination: After the interview and document verification, candidates must clear a medical exam, but it is only a qualifying step, not contributing to the marks.
