CAREER IN DEFENCE

“The safety, honor and welfare of your country come first, always and every time. The honour, welfare and comfort of the men you command come next. Your own ease, comfort and safety come last, always and every time.”

Officers who graduate from this prestigious academy swell with pride, whenever they see this motto as it exemplifies their patriotism and courage, and is a constant reminder of why they decided to join the Indian Army.

While joining the Indian Army doesn’t need astute academic caliber, but you need to have extremely high level of physical endurance and mental agility. Also it demands a different kind of a commitment from you. You can join as an officer or lower down in the hierarchy as a junior commissioned officer (JCO) or as a soldier. Introduction: Paramilitary Forces

The Paramilitary Forces of India (PMF) are those agencies that help the Law Enforcement Agencies and the Indian Armed Forces in their operations. It has over a million personnel active in its service. PMF is regarded as the world’s second largest paramilitary organization (second only to the Chinese People’s Armed Forces) and its head officers and other senior officers being members of Indian Police Service (IPS).

The defence services of the country are responsible for the guarding our national boundaries from external aggression. However for internal security, as also for providing additional support to the defence forces in guarding the national frontiers, paramilitary services viz., CRPF, BSF, ITBP and CISF had been constituted many decades ago .Each of these units plays a well-defined role besides coming to the nation’s rescue at times of national calamities and emergencies.

The first tier of the PMF is formed by the Central Police Organizations (CPO) and the second tier is formed by the Central Paramilitary Forces (CPF). The main difference between the two is that CPO works independently or in coordination with Indian Federal Agencies, State Police Forces and other Law Enforcement Agencies whereas the CPF works in cooperation with the Indian Armed Forces. All the branches of PMF excluding the Indian Coast Guard are under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The largest force of the PMF is the Central Reserve Police Force which assists the Indian Police in maintaining law and order.

Nature of Work:

CRPF – The promotions in CRPF are structured. Generally an Assistant Commandant may reach the rank of DIG or IG in a 20 year service. After training at the academy, Assistant Commandants complete their field training. They move to the rank of deputy commandant in five to six years. As Commandants they are in command of about 1000 men. Movement upwards to the position of DIG is dependent on selection, based on service records and vacancies. During these years, opportunity for special training is available eg. in mountaineering, communication, management etc. Many refresher courses keep the personnel updated in all aspects of work. Officers of CRPF are given opportunity to serve with National Security Guards and Special Protection Groups. This earns them special allowances.

B.S.F – Newly selected candidates begin their careers as AC (Assistant Commandant) and within 20 years the career graph ascends to the rank of DIG or IG. Officers of these organisations also get the opportunity to work for special groups like National Security Guards and Special Protection Group. They are deputed to these groups for three to four years, after which they are replaced by another batch of officers sent on deputation. They receive special allowances for their important duties like protecting VIPs during deputation. CRPF, BSF, ITBP act as feeders for these special groups doing important duties.

CRPF – Selection Boards of Central Police Organisation recruit personnel for the CRPF. While selection to non-gazetted posts of constables is made through a selection test open to non-graduates, the gazetted positions are open only to graduates. Graduates from any stream can apply if they fall in the 19 to 25 years age group.

They begin their careers as Assistant Commandants/Company Commanders, Quartermasters and Deputy Superintendents. The prescribed qualification is a 1st Class/2nd Class Bachelor’s degree with 50% marks. Special relaxation in marks is made for graduates who have the certificates of N.C.C. For officer cadres, preference is given to certificate holders. Selection is made through a written examination, physical efficiency test (PET) and an interview. Senior positions of IGs, DIGs, Commandants are filled through promotions or by deputed personnel from the defence services or from the Police Services.

Police – Entry is open to the police service to both men and women. The police constabulary is a large force. Physically robust young boys/girls are recruited. Deck officers monitor the loading, storage and unloading of cargo and the maintenance of deck machinery. They also take care of the safety, firefighting and life-saving equipment in terms of any emergency. They also maintain the legal and operational records. The Engineering department looks after the main engine, which is gigantic and complicated. They are also responsible for the operation of mechanical and electrical equipment on board, managing power, fueling and distribution systems, repairing and upgrading systems and equipments and implementing regular equipment inspections and maintenance programmes. Engineers also need to be updated with new developments in the marine engineering field.

Ratings have three categories. Deck rating is responsible for handling cargo, mooring / unmooring and general maintenance. Engine ratings who help the engineering officers in maintenance of engine and other equipments. Saloon (catering) consists of steward / cooks; they look after the housekeeping and catering.

Career Prospects

Merchant Navy plays a very important role in import – export business. Without merchant navy, international trade would come to an stand still. It is growing industry offering hard working and qualified people with opportunities in navigation, engineering and catering & hospitality. There are numerous government and private shipping companies which hire officers for the deck, engine and service departments. The foreign shipping companies offer better pay packages.Merchant navy offers opportunities for promotion, which are dependent on clearing the requisite competency exams conducted by the Ministry of Surface Transport for all navigating officers and marine engineers. Among all developing countries, India ranks as one of the countries having the largest merchant shipping fleets.

OTHERS ROUTES FOR ENTRY:

Instead of entering the merchant navy through the training programmes at TS Chanakya and MERI, interested persons may directly approach shipping firms/lines, which from time to time recruit deck cadets and train them for a marine career. Minimum eligibility to apply for deck cadets is a pass in +2 or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. In case of engineering officers shipping lines follow their own recruitment policies. Sometimes candidates with BE qualifications are taken directly after they complete on eight month attachment with a naval dockyard in Bombay, Cochin, Calcutta or Vishakhapatnam. Unlike the marine engineers from MERI these candidates have to pass additional competency examination.

ENTRY OF WOMEN:

The image of the bearded captain in white uniform may no longer signify the typical mariner, soon women, too will do that cap. With Sonali Banarjee of Allahabad joining the marine engineering courses the Indian merchant navy is finally entering the unisex time zone. More and more women are now opting for training in marine engineering which will eventually lead to their employment in the merchant navy.

Career in Marine Engineering

This branch of science, deals with the engineering of ships, boats, oil rigs and different other kinds of marine vessel. Such type of engineering includes both marine propulsion, which is all about the propulsion systems of the vessel and marine architecture that refers to the engineering of the structures supporting the various marine vessels.
Marine engineering can be of the following two kinds:

Sea going engineering

Shore based engineering

A student aspiring to be a marine engineer needs to have an academic degree of this course of study. Many universities, based all over the world, offers varied courses on this field. The nature of those educational programs ranges from under graduate level to post graduate level.

Current Scenario of Marine Engineering in India

The requirement of Marine Engineers is getting increased day by day to keep pace with the increase in the number of marine vessels. CAREERS IN SHIPPING INDUSTRY

Merchant Navy Ships consists of Bulk Careers that carry cargo, Tankers that carry petroleum crude and derivatives and Liners that carry passengers. The navigation of these ships and their maintenance require qualified personnel on land as well as at sea. The industry is a highly specialised one and it needs trained manpower.

Specialisation:

The two broad areas of specialisation are navigation and engineering. Navigation involves the navigation of ship and overall responsibility of the ship. Engineering involves running the ship and engineering of the ship.

Navigation:

Training of navigation is offered at “Training Ship Chanakya” – a land based institution. This programme in Nautical Science is of three years duration and covers principles and practices of navigation, use of navigational equipment, seamanship, basic principle of ship design, and ship repairs. Successful completion of the programme earns for the candidates a B.Sc. in Nautical Sciences from the Bombay University. Following this, a training of one year on the deck is required for obtaining second mate’s certificate of competency. This allows appointment to foreign going ships. From the second mate upwards, the officer has to clear regular examinations to go up he hierarchy on the navigation side. Another route to becoming a navigating officer in the merchant navy is to join as a deck cadet in the ships. After a minimum of three years, the cadets can apply for appearing for a written examination that evaluates their competency to become navigating officers.

Marine Engineering:

The Engineering stream is concerned with the maintenance of the ship. This includes the engine, navigation systems, and auxiliary systems such as the air conditioners, heating systems, equipment for loading and unloading and safely equipment. Some of the marine engineers who opt for a share job are absorbed in design, building and dry dock maintenance of ships.

Career in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering

Land resources are getting scarce and oceans and water bodies would be the destination in future. Small countries like Singapore are expanding and creating artificial land and underwater structures. For a country like India which surrounded by water on three sides the potential in water structures and vehicles is huge. Who knows India will have commercial floating airport or floating city. All the structures and developments in the oceans is made possible by Naval architects and Ocean Engineers.

Naval architects are basically engineers who deal with the design, construction, maintenance and operation of marine vessels and structures like watercrafts, hydrofoils and oil drilling platforms. They do research, design development, design evaluation and stability calculations during all stages of the life of a marine vehicle. Preliminary design of the vessel, its detailed design, construction, trials, operation and maintenance, launching and dry-docking are the main activities involved. Ship design calculations are also required for ships being modified (by means of conversion, rebuilding, modernization, or repair). Naval architects also are involved in formulation of safety regulations and damage control rules and the approval and certification of ship designs to meet statutory and non-statutory requirements.

Their work includes all types of watercrafts like cargo ships, tankers, bulk carriers, warships, submarines, passenger ferries, cruise liners, hovercraft, boats, yachts, icebreakers, and other structures.

Ocean Engineers invent Oceanographic instruments and devices for use by Oceanographers. Ocean Engineers study engineering sciences, and receive training in core study areas related to Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture. One can work as air hostess, customer care executive, air ticketing professional, commercial pilot, operation executive, flight steward, aerospace engineer, aviation administrator, cargo manager or be a part of the cabin crew. Various divisions of the prominent airlines companies like Kingfisher, Sahara India, Jet Airways, Deccan Airlines, Trans Asian Aviation, Indian Airlines and Indian International Airlines etc. hire professionally trained aspirants. Opportunities in civil aviation department of India are also desirable. Apart from career opportunities in top Indian airlines, doors of international airlines like Lufthansa, Emirates, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, etc. are also open.

Aviation refers to all activities involving the operation of aircrafts. Aviation courses in India deal with Flying Operation (jobs performed by Pilots), Aircrew (such as Air Hostesses), Aircraft, Air Traffic Management, Technical aspects of Flight, Aviation Safety, Regulatory Policies and economics of airport. Civil Aviation courses (as opposed to the Indian Air Force, that is, the air wing of the Indian armed forces) are necessary for those wishing to work in government or regulatory bodies of aviation or those planning to work as aviation consultants. All aviation courses in India are supposed to comply with the rules laid down by the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Careers in the aviation industry are much sought after as they are very well paid. Not too many people go in for careers in aviation as the courses are very expensive. However with student loans and high pay packages once one finishes the course and gets a job, that is a lesser problem nowadays.

Nature of Work

The nature of work is different for different types of workers in the aviation industry. Whereas being a pilot or an air hostess is most advertised, there are other equally lucrative options in the aviation industry. The aviation courses focus on some aspects of the work like airline customer support, flight attending rules, the nuances of the air transport industry, cargo marketing and management, transportation of perishable cargo, ticket reservation, regulation of traffic, customer relationship, cargo reservations, attendance of flight, flight and ground instruction, cockpit resource management, federal regulation and the federal laws on aviation, aerodynamics and the basic concepts of flying, advanced navigation procedures, multi engine flight instruction, crew synchronization, aviation safety, aviation administration and meteorology.

The nature of the work, entails in several posts like those of pilot, air hospitality attendants like air hostesses and flight stewards, cabin crew, travelling all over the world.

Two distinct sectors: Commercial and Military sectors are present. Regulations for the commercial aviation industry are determined by the apex body, Directory General of Civil Aviation in India (DGCA).

Personality

Agility, stamina and good health are vital to attend to the stressful duties for long hours. Requires presence of mind, courage, physical fitness, determination, due to the risks which flying involves. They need to be self-confident and at east working with other people.

Air hostesses must have a need appearance. They require a polite, pleasant and tactful manner with the ability to put people at east also described as ‘service aptitude’.

Aircraft engineers must be able to work in all types of weather conditions. Ability to work as a team is needed.

Personality

Air hostesses and flight stewards need to have a hospitable and pleasant personality. One of the common problems faced by air hospitality attendants is that the passengers misbehave with them. Air hospitality attendants need to have a strong personality to deal with such problems in a strong manner and rebuke the passengers without becoming excessively rude.

As for the technical staff and for almost all jobs in the aviation sector, one must be able to work at different times of the day. One may have to work night shifts and sometimes may have to spend more than 24 hours without sleeping. Pilots, cabin crew and air traffic controllers also need to have a high level of concentration and focus as there is a lot of minute observation and immediate response required in such technical posts and these are also positions of great responsibility as the lives of the passengers depends on the proper functioning of the air plane which is ensured by the minute and thorough work of those involved in such work.

Professional Courses

Professional courses are available for both those wishing to work in technical sectors of the aviation industry as well as for those wishing to work in non technical sectors of the aviation industry like those involved in air hospitality like air hostesses and flight stewards.

Eligibility

The eligibility for technical courses is Physics, Chemistry and Maths till class 12 in school.

For air hospitality careers, the eligibility is generally appearing for the class 12 board examinations though some institutes require physics, chemistry and maths till class 12.

Some of them also require a certain physical height in order to be eligible to become air hostesses. The practice is widely criticized as it has no necessity.

Non technical jobs such as those of air hostesses are well paid too. Even fresh starters get paid approximately Rs 16,000 per month.

The fees for aviation courses are very steep as well. However, student loans are easily available and the loan can be easily repaid off in six months’ time after one gets a job in the aviation industry.

An added benefit of being in the aviation industry especially for pilots, cabin crew, air hospitality attendants like flight stewards and air hostesses, is the chance to visit places all over the world as part of the work requirements. This is an attractive feature of careers in the aviation industry.

How to find a Job?

Most institutes offering aviation courses also have placement cells. Recruitments are made through campus placements. One can also apply to the major airlines in India like Indian, Spice Jet, Deccan Aviation, Jet Airways, Kingfisher, Alliance Air and Air Sahara. With new airline companies coming up frequently, getting jobs in the aviation industry is not a problem as the nature of the jobs are specialised and there are few skilled practitioners.

Selected students undergo one – year advance course in Meteorology at IMD campuses in Pune and New Delhi.

Meteorology Courses in India are not as popular as they are in western nations, partially because these have not aroused much interest in students possibly because of the lack of information. Meteorology is the ‘Science of Weather’. The term has been derived from the Ancient Greek word ‘Meteoros’ meaning ‘High in the Sky’ and ‘Logy’ meaning ‘The study of the Sky’. Aristotle’s ‘Meteorological’ (c.340 ) is the oldest comprehensive treatise on meteorological subjects. It is also the interdisciplinary scientific study of the atmosphere. Additionally, it can be defined as ‘The branch of science concerned with the processes and phenomena of the atmosphere, especially as a means of forecasting the weather’. Largely, Meteorology deals with various meteorological factors such as the changes in temperature, air pressure, moisture and wind direction in the troposphere. Meteorology involves 3 aspects – 1) Observation 2) Understanding and 3) Predication of Weather. All these aspects are used in understanding the pattern and behaviour of climate to discover how natural processes and human activities affect our atmosphere. The study and research of Meteorology is conducted with simple instruments like the thermometer for measuring temperature or the anemometer for recording wind speed. More advanced instruments include Satellites, which are increasingly being launched and used to monitor the weather globally or locally.
The information gathered by various countries around the world is used to prepare weather charts which are analyzed by professionals at forecasting centres. Weather forecasts are then made with the help of modern computers and supercomputers. Weather forecasts are essential for many activities like agriculture, aviation, shipping, fisheries, tourism, defence, industrial projects, water management and disaster mitigation. A Meteorology professional is known as ‘Meteorologist’. Meteorologists, also known as ‘Atmospheric Scientists’, study the atmosphere and its characteristics. They use various equipments such as rain gauge, anemometer, thermometer, barometer, radiosondes, remote sensing instruments (Radar, Lidar, and satellites etc), in order to measure temperature, humidity, pressure, wind speed, rainfall and air quality. Meteorologists provide a variety of services to industries and other organizations. Some are consulting meteorologists with their own companies and others worked for corporations. Meteorologists help planners and contractors locate and design airports, factories and many other kinds of construction projects. They provide climatological information for heating and air conditioning engineers. Meteorologists also work in government agencies, private consultancies, research services, industrial enterprises, utilities, radio and television stations and in education.

Some of its specialized fields are –

Aeronomy – It is the study of the physics of the upper atmosphere.
Aerology – It is the study of free air not adjacent to the earth’s surface.
Agricultural Meteorology – It is study of the application of meteorological information for the enhancement of crop yields and reduction of crop losses.
Applied Meteorology – It is the study and the application of weather data for specific practical problems.
Climatology – It is the study of climate of a place or regions on the basis of weather – related date gathered over a period of time.
Dynamic Meteorology – It is the study of atmospheric motions including the meteorology of other planets and satellites in the solar system.
Physical Meteorology – It is the study of the physical properties of the atmosphere.
Synoptic Meteorology – It is the study of the movement of low pressure area, air, masses, fronts and other weather systems used for day-to-day analysis and forecasting.

Other related careers in Aviation Industry

Still amongst the better-paid and more attractive jobs going, in popular imagery the profession of a pilot has a special mystique attached to it. So those who do succeed in realizing the almost universal childhood dream of earning their wings are generally a pretty pleased lot. Although the employment scenario has been tight in the last decade, thanks to the waves of change sweeping the ‘civil aviation industry and the entry of several new private and international airlines, more aspirants may be able to realize this dream in the near future.
Aviation sector has opened avenues for Pilots, Co-Pilots, Aircraft Maintenance Engineers, Cabin Crew, Technicians and Ground Duty Service Officers. In 2003-04, India had only three domestic airlines with 123 commercial jets. But today, the scenario has changed.
If a person has a scientific bent of mind, he can opt for a career as a Pilot, Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, etc. and if a person is good at communication and interpersonal skills, she/he can consider a career as an Air Hostess or a Flight Steward.
Commercial pilots are employed by national airlines like Indian Airlines or Air India and by private airlines as well as by foreign airlines. With the Asia Pacific region emerging as the pivot of the world, the aviation industry in India is poised for takeoff. From a mere 175 aircrafts in 2004, by 2010 around 400 odd aircrafts will zip across the Indian skies.
The aviation industry employs about 3000 pilots and there is an immediate shortage of 450 planes that will be added to the activity expanding Indian fleet in the next five years and a shortage of additional 4,500 pilots stares us in the face (Total requirement: 7500 pilots by 2010)
Training to be a pilot can be a pretty expensive affair that can push you into a financial air pocket! From April 2001 all DGCA-subsidized rates have been discontinued. However, various states offer separate subsidies of varying amounts up to the PPL stage. Considering the high cost of aviation fuel, you have to pay the steep commercial rate, which is in the region of Rs.2750-3500 per hour. 40 free flying scholarships are awarded to SC/ST trainee pilots every year. Under this scheme, apart from free flying training, student pilots receive financial aid.
While a private school may charge as much as Rs.15-20 lakh, the cost of obtaining a CPL in a government-sponsored school works out to Rs.10 lakh plus boarding and lodging, which add up to another Rs.1, 500/- p.m.
Salaries for commercial pilots are very attractive, ranging anywhere from Rs.40, 000/- to whopping Rs.4 lakh p.m., depending on the airline. Besides the obvious thrill of going places and seeing the world in five-star comfort, there are several attractive perks that go with the job.

Where to Look for Work:

Besides Indian there are several private airlines like Jet Airways, Sahara, Air Deccan, Kingfisher, currently expanding their fleet and range of operations in India. There are several other international airlines that operate through India like United Airlines, Air Canada, Virgin Atlantic, Quantas, KLM, Lufthansa, United Airlines, Cathay Pacific, British Airways, Thai Airways, Malaysian Airlines and China Airlines to name a few.
You could start off as a trainee pilot on smaller aircraft. Besides large corporate houses that own private aircraft, there are about 40 aviation companies in the country that rent out helicopters and small aircraft (for a fee of Rs.30, 000-Rs.1.30 lakh per hour + 15% air travel tax.)

Helicopter Pilots:

Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd’s (HAL) Rotary Wing Academy at Bangalore would be a good bet. However in compliance with the flight-safety requirements that are being followed worldwide, the DGCA has recently upped the mandatory flying time from the present 100 hours to 150 hours before the CHPL can be issued. So correspondingly, the earlier fee of Rs.10 lakh, which makes it rather steep. Also I’ve heard some rumblings about the non-availability of training aircraft. But on the flip side, the placements for helicopter pilots are far better than their CPL counterparts.
Lest you think this is only a male prerogative, remember Indian Airlines was the first to have a women pilot (Durba Bannerjee) command the wide bodied Airbus 300 way back in the early 60’s. Today it has scores of women Airbus pilots on its rolls. The Indian Air Force has over 200.

Aptitude

There are certain attributes to be a Pilot. First of all, one should not be afraid of heights and should have a passion to fly those machines. One should possess a good coordination of mind and limbs. The ability to remain calm under any circumstance and apply theoretical knowledge into practice while flying is very important.
A Pilot has to be quick thinker as he is the one who is responsible for the lives of many. One should have patience, commitment, responsibility and self-confidence. A lot of hard work, stamina, adaptability to follow difficult time schedules, good team spirit etc., are also required in an aspirant. Most importantly, one must have emotional stability in crisis situations.

Eligibility

To get a CPL, one should have passed 10+2 examination with Physics and Mathematics and must be between the age of 18-30 years. The minimum height should be 5 feet and eyesight 6/6.

Air Hostess / Flight Steward

The trouble free, comfortable and safe journey of a passenger is of prime importance to the aviation sector. In this regard, it is an Air Hostess / Flight Steward whose role becomes really crucial as they are the first one to welcome passengers aboard an aircraft.
Their job also includes giving instructions to the passengers on how to use safety measures during crisis, catering foods and drinks to the passengers and answering passengers| inquiries on facilities and services. They are supposed to provide First Aid to passengers who feel sick.
By the count, the various airlines in the country have almost 10,207 Cabin Crew members in 2007-08 and the number is expected to grow to almost 20,284 by 2011-12.

Aptitude:

To be an Air Hostess or a Flight Steward, one should have common sense, sense of responsibility, initiative quality, friendly outgoing personality, politeness, physical stamina and the capacity to work for long hours on the feet.
The ability to react quickly in time of emergency, presence of mind, systematic approach, unruffled appearance, a well-modulated pleasant voice and a proportionate figure with a graceful carriage are the important traits required in an Air hostess or a Flight Steward.

Eligibility

The educational qualification for an Air Hostess / Flight Steward training programme is 10+2 or a graduate degree with a diploma / degree in Hotel Management or Tourism Management. The aspirant must be eligible to hold an Indian Passport and should be below twenty-five years of age with proportionate weight and height.
Further, one must be unmarried, with normal eyesight of 6/6 increased vision in each eye. Fluency in English, Hindi and knowledge of an international language is an added advantage.

Selection Procedure

The applicant should be physically fit with a pleasing personality and clear complexion. After the initial screening of applicants is completed, the airline company calls them for a written examination, usually of the objective type (multiple choice).
Those who qualify in the written examination have to appear for a group discussion followed by a personal interview of successful candidates. If selected, the applicant will be on training for two to three months in which one can learn about service, grooming, safety and first aid, after which one is initially put on trainee flights.

Flight Training

The flight training covers several topics, each of which deals with technical or nontechnical aspects of the aircraft.
Beginning with the history of aviation, the candidates are made to learn in-flight service, passenger handling, passenger psychology, service of meals on the aircraft, the art of conversation, transactional analysis, emergency evacuation system, personal grooming and hygiene, First Aid, confidence building, handling of visually impaired passengers, making announcements, emergency demonstration, etc.

Prospects

There is a great demand for Air Hostesses/Flight Stewards in the Aviation sector.

Flight Purser

After three to five years, depending upon your performance, Flight Steward/Air Hostess is eligible to become a Flight Purser. Your responsibilities increase as you take over the charge of the Cabin Crew on board. Salaries generally get double up.

Ground Job:

You can join here directly or after having served on the flight for long, you can opt for ground jobs in sections like staff-training and human resource management in the corporate office.

Remuneration

The Cabin Crew can get up to Rs.40, 000 per month for domestic flights whereas upto Rs.1, 50,000 for international flights on wide-bodied aircrafts. The ground staff can also earn Rs.20, 000 – Rs.30, 000 per month.

Aircraft Maintenance Engineer:

The Aircraft Maintenance Engineers play a stellar role in Aviation sector as they are the ones who ensure that the aircraft is in a perfect condition before take-off. An engineer needs to be completely focused on safety as the casual attitude can pose a danger to the lives of people on board.
The Aircraft Engineer has to certify the aircraft fit for release. The job ensures the availability of safe aircraft at the best possible cost. The Engineering and Maintenance department of an airline performs scheduled and unscheduled tasks, leading to restoration of the expected airworthiness.
The job includes diagnostic and mechanical duties covering maintenance, repair, trouble shooting and overhaul, in addition to performing inspection and modification on an aircraft.

Aptitude

An Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, at times, has to work under stringent conditions, tough deadlines and harsh weather in difficult locations. To overcome all this, one should be logical, focused and have perseverance.

Eligibility

The basic and minimum qualification required to be an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer is a Senior School Certificate with Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics as main subjects. Candidates are required to undergo a 3-year certificate course on aircraft maintenance engineering, conducted by various training schools approved by the Director-General of Civil Aviation.
Candidates also need to undergo structured aircraft type courses in the mechanical or avionics stream and obtain regulatory licences or approvals on a type of aircraft. Candidates need an engineering degree for career in support services in technical services, engineering planning quality assurance and logistics. Courses on structured aircraft type maintenance are also desirable.

Other Jobs

Flight and Ground Instructors:

The Flight Instructors give training to the Pilots on some systems and are mainly with engineering background. On the other hand, the Ground Instructors are from operations background.
Flight Instructors are usually senior Pilots who are employed within the airline. They usually perform line duties as they are not released due to shortage of pilots.

Flight Despatchers:

Flight Dispatchers are those people who give a briefing to the Pilots before a flight on the weather, flight path and optimizing the flight.

Factor Facilitators:

The Factor Facilitators give training to the cockpit and cabin crew on resource management. They also undertake joint sessions of cabin crew, engineers and cockpit crew on working together.

Aviation Psychologists:

The Factor Facilitators give training to the cockpit and cabin crew on resource management. They also undertake joint sessions of cabin crew, engineers and cockpit crew on working together.
The Aviation Psychologists assess the attitudes of the Pilots through psychometric tests. They also guide the young cabin crew to overcome the problems faced by them at their job.

Aviation Doctors:

The Aviation Doctors conduct a rigorous medical check-up of the Pilots and other employees as per the norms of Aviation Medicine and the Central Medicine Establishment, both run by the Air Force. The airlines have to look their slots months’ in advance due to high rush of employees from different airlines.
The white-collar jobs on the ground, airport and custom services-people who do check-in, ticketing, etc., are also on the rise. After acquiring Air Sahara, Jet Airways has 11,000 people as its employees whereas Sahara (renamed JetLite) has 4,000 people.

Career in Event Management

Event management is a glamorous and exciting profession which demands a lot of hard work and dynamism. As the name suggests, it means conceptualizing, planning, organizing and finally executing an event. The event could be of any type – musical show, concert, exhibition, product launching etc. This industry is just five years old in India, but holds a lot of promise for expansion. It offers enormous scope for ambitious young people.

Nature of Work

This is a profession which demands perfection, challenge of meeting deadlines within a stipulated time and budget and the patience to pay attention to every small detail of things that go into the organizing. It keeps a person on his toes, and ultimately provides a great deal of satisfaction and emotional contentment of having organized a successful show which is appreciated by the audience. Of course, one also needs to be prepared to handle any mishaps that may just happen at the last minute despite perfect co-ordination and arrangements.

Event Manager Overview

Be it a birthday party or a marriage reception Event Managers are the master organizer- the brain behind these events. Right from arranging yummy chole baturas to flying in flowers straight from Amsterdam, Event Managers will be counted upon to handle the works.

If you want to test your organising skills with bigger events like the next Miss India contest, you have to consider a career in Event Management. Who knows as an event manager you might just land the deal to hold a Britney Spears concert in India. Think big!!! So get ready. Its Showtime folks!

Event Management is an offshoot of the Advertising/PR Industry. Ever since the advent of satellite television everyone is exposed to mega events being held all over the world simultaneously. Award ceremonies too have become more polished. Car launches are rivaling the derby in terms of glamour. So the demand for individuals specializing in Event Management is on the rise.

Event management is very closely related to advertising and marketing. Events can be thought of as another means of advertising and brand building. Event management, as an activity constitutes of visualization, creativity, and meticulous planning and venue management.

Visualization involves imagining the event to be a brand and then customizing and promoting it as per the needs and values of the brand. This requires a lot of creativity, originality and novel ideas to lend a winning and distinguishing edge to the event so that it stands apart from the others. The creative potential of a person is tapped to a very high degree.

To make an event successful, one needs to have an in-depth understanding of the product or brand for which the event is being organized, and then plan accordingly. The execution of the event is a process of projecting a small idea in a whole new way. The presentation is what matters, to make the look and feel of the event a wonderful experience for the audience.

The design value is a major planning consideration as well, and this includes a logo creation for the event, customizing the decor, furniture and the entire surroundings in such a way that it blends with the basic theme of the event.

After planning comes the actual execution part, which needs to be orchestrated in a perfect manner. The venue needs to be managed efficiently in all domains which include managing the banquet area, placing security personnel at the right places, hospitality and all the other small things which provide all the participants a perfectly comfortable feeling.

Personality

A person who is creative, has organizational skills, enjoys meeting people to form good inter-personal relationships and is willing to work hard to experience the thrill of achievement is rightly suited to enter into this industry.

As an Event Manager you’ll conceptualize an event for your client in terms of theme, content and visualization. As an Event Manager you’ll also look at the minute details like décor, furnishing, design, caption, visuals, feedback, scripting, invitation cards and also the medium of presentation.

Event Managers organise everything be it marriage reception, trade show, exhibitions, conventions, road shows, product launches, public entertainment shows, concerts, high profile parties, awards functions and even sporting events.

As an Event Manager your job starts at least 2-3 months ahead of the actual date of the event. The amount of work will depend on the magnitude of the event. For instance if you are getting in Britney Spears for a concert in India, you will have to get in touch with Britney, coordinate her dates, book tickets, take care of her accommodation in India, get the requisite legal permissions, select and book the venue, get the sponsors to pay up in time, etc.

The real work happens on the D day when, as an event manager you will have to check the sound, lights, set design, security and the works. Mainly event manager’s job would be to work out the actual logistics and co-ordinate between the various parties, generate hype and spread the word around.

Don’t take the word hype lightly here. It’s the single-most important factor in this business. Event industry thrives on hype – the more the better. As a event manager, you basically get anyone and everyone (even those who are not remotely connected to the event) to talk about the event.

Troubleshooting is another important function of an Event Manager, As an event manager you never know when things might go wrong. Here, security is the buzzword. A really good event can be marred by poor security. If you are arranging an event for New Years Eve, troublemakers will have to be taken care of. Gatecrashers will spoil a perfectly arranged marriage party. As an event manager you have to take these things into account when you arrange a big event.

Last but not the least, as an event manager you have to make sure that all the requisite permissions have been sought. You’ll often have to deal with spoilsports like cops. Basically, an event manager’s job is to see that all things are taken care of.

What’s it about?

Event management is about organising a professional and focused event for a target audience. It involves visualizing concepts and planning, budgeting, organising and executing events such as fashion shows, musical concerts, corporate seminars, exhibitions, wedding celebrations, theme parties, product launches, among others. This career does not require much investment and offers a huge canvas for creative expression. The payoff Remuneration in this field varies according to the type of event managed. A trainee can get around Rs. 15,000 a month. From here, salaries depend on the company one is working for. A freelancer’s income depends on the event s/he handles. The head of an event management company can earn in lakhs, depending on the scale of the events handled and whether she/he has a stake in the company.
