 Specialisations in the field of Medicine:

One of the many options you have as a healthcare professional is choosing a medical specialty in which to practice. Whether you’re a nurse, a physician, or allied health professional, choosing a medical specialty will help focus your educational goals, job search efforts, and career choices.

The sooner you identify your true passion in medicine, the more successful you may become, by working in a field you love. For example, is your passion working with kids, pregnant moms, cancer patients, or the elderly? Do you want to ease the pain of the dying, or bring new life into the world? Consider the various specialties:

  1. Allergy and Immunology

The medical specialty of Allergy and Immunology focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of allergies.

  1. Anesthesiology

Anesthesiology is the medical specialty focusing on administering pain-killing drugs during surgery in the operating room. Anesthesiology also includes the field of Pain Management, a sub-specialty which helps manage chronic (ongoing) pain in patients with prescription medication, injections, or other therapeutic methods.

  1. Dermatology

The field of dermatology focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the skin.

  1. Emergency Medicine

Emergency Medicine is the field which focuses on emergent, or acute medical care of patients who need immediate medical attention due to trauma, accident, or a major medical event.

  1. Family Medicine

Family medicine is a primary care field overseeing the basic healthcare needs of patients of all ages, from infant to geriatric.

  1. Internal Medicine

Internal medicine is similar to family medicine in that it includes primary care and basic healthcare management of all areas of a patient’s health. However, internal medicine typically does not include pediatrics or obstetrics, whereas family medicine often does. Additionally, internal medicine includes more in-depth training and patient care in a hospital setting and acute care. Finally, internal medicine includes many more sub-specialties such as:

  1. Neurology

Neurology is the medical specialty focusing on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the brain and nervous system. Patients who have suffered a stroke, or who battle ailments such as epilepsy, Alzheimer’s, or Parkinson’s are a few examples of some of the patients who are treated by neurologists.

  1. Neurosurgery

Neurosurgery is a surgical specialty of medicine devoted solely to surgery of the brain.

  1. OB/GYN (Obstetrics & Gynecology)

Obstetrics is healthcare for pregnant women, including labor and childbirth and providing a safe delivery of the baby. Gynecology entails the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the female reproductive system.

  1. Ophthalmology

Ophthalmology is the medical specialty focusing on treatment of the eyes, and retina. Not to be confused with an optometrist, ophthalmologists can also do eye surgery and prescribe medication unlike optometrists, who typically focus on eyesight correction and enhancement and prescription lenses.

  1. Orthopaedic Surgery

Orthopaedic surgery entails surgery of the joints, bones, and muscles. Patients with sports injuries or injuries from an accident may be treated by orthopaedic surgeons, as are patients with some types of arthritis in the joints which may be surgically repaired.

  1. Otolaryngology (E.N.T.)

Otolaryngology is the medical specialty commonly known as “E.N.T.”, which stands for ear, nose, and throat. Otolaryngology includes office-based care, and surgical procedures both in the hospital and in the office. Therefore, a variety of practice environments and employers are available in this field.

  1. Pediatrics

Pediatrics is a primary care field of medicine focusing on the healthcare of children, from newborn to age 18. Most pediatric jobs are office-based, where routine physicals, immunizations, cough and colds, and “lumps and bumps” are handled frequently. However, there are also numerous pediatric jobs available at children’s hospitals, particularly in pediatric subspecialties such as pediatric surgery.

  1. Psychiatry

Psychiatry entails the treatment of patients’ mental health and well-being. Psychiatry may be practiced in an office, providing psychotherapy and medication for more common psychiatric care, or in a psychiatric hospital for more serious, acute psychiatric issues such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and other issues requiring hospitalization. Psychiatry also involves treatment of patients with addictions such as drugs or alcohol.

  1. Radiology

Radiology is the medical field which entails the use of medical imaging to diagnose a variety of problems across all specialties and body systems. Radiology is a very high-tech field offering a great deal of job growth, because it is utilized in conjunction with so many other medical specialties including cardiology, surgery, oncology, gastroenterology, to name a few.

  1. Surgery

General surgeons perform a variety of abdominal and laparoscopic surgeries. Surgeons may also sub specialize to focus on trauma surgery, vascular surgery, plastic surgery, or cardiac surgery. Surgical careers involve surgeon, surgical tech, or nurse.

  1. Urology

Urology is the medical specialty involving diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of the urinary tract as well as the male reproductive system. Urology includes office-based care and surgical treatment.

Career as Pharmacist

“India has around 24000 pharmaceutical manufacturers however only 25% are in the organized sector. Apart from serving the country they are one of the largest employers in India. Large number of hospitals and health care organizations and also offer a big opportunity in the pharmaceutical sector”.

Pharmacists are health professionals who dispense prescription medication to patients and provide information about the medicines their doctors have prescribed them. They explain doctors’ instructions to patients so that these individuals can use these medications safely and effectively. They aid physicians, dentists and veterinarians by dispensing appropriate medications to patients. Some pharmacists may also specialize in pharmaceutical research, or in marketing and sales of particular medications for a company. Many in this field work in drug, department or retail store settings, and many more work in hospital settings. They are specialists in their knowledge of medications, and must always be furthering their education in this area since new medications are developed all the time.

In retail settings, the pharmacist compounds drugs, orders supplies when necessary, may advise physicians on drug interactions, and dispenses medications to people with prescriptions. A pharmacist cannot give medications to those without prescriptions unless the medications are legally sold over the counter. Pharmacists are also excellent resources if you’re taking over the counter medications and need advice on whether these will conflict with prescription meds. They’re further responsible for making sure patients understand how to properly use prescription drugs. In hospital settings, pharmacists work in the same manner. A pharmacist in the research setting may be responsible for developing new drugs, testing drugs, administering pharmaceuticals for specific tests, or studying developed drugs for safety and possible interactions. Others pharmacists work for pharmaceutical companies or run independent laboratories. Drug control administration and armed forces also offer a wide range of opportunities to pharmacists. Some pharmacists also work in sale promotion work as medical representatives. As a Medical Representative one keeps the medical practitioner informed about the new drugs and treatments developed by various pharmaceutical companies and thus indirectly promote their sales.

A diploma or degree holder in Pharmacy, after registering with the State Pharmacy Council, can set up and run their own pharmacy or chemists and druggists shop to stock and sell medicines and dispense them according to doctors prescriptions.

Introduction

“Speech is the mirror of soul as the man speaks, so is he.”— Publilius Syrus

This essentially brings out the importance of speech. Some people have difficulty in speech by birth, due to genetic disorders or may happen due to some reason or incident later in life. Thus, they have to take speech therapy to improve and communicate better. Speech therapy is an allied medical science which cures the disorders of speech, voice and language of a person.

Speech therapists diagnose and treat people with speech and communication difficulties due to congenital, developmental, or acquired disabilities. Speech therapists work with individuals who cannot produce sounds or do not produce them clearly, who have rhythm and fluency difficulties, or who have voice disorders. Individuals who have problems producing or understanding language, as well as those who want to modify an accent, can be helped by speech therapy. The difficulties speech therapists treat can be caused by neurological disorders, developmental disabilities, learning disabilities, physical problems, voice pathology, hearing impairments, or emotional disorders.

Occupational therapist uses various methods in the treatment of their patients to assist them in maximum recovery and becoming normal after a prolonged disabling illness. This type of therapy is patient specific, involving recreational, creative or educational activities.

Audiology and Speech Therapy: Hearing is a crucial means for the acquisition and monitoring of language and speech. Audiology is the study of hearing disorders. These professionals treat people who are unable to speak or hear clearly. Audiologist use audiometers and other testing device to measure the loudness at which a person begins to hear sound, the ability to distinguish between sounds and the nature and extent of hearing loss. Speech therapist uses special instruments as well as written and oral test to determine the nature and extent of impairment and to record and analyze speech disorders.

Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT): Medical laboratory technologists examine and analyze body fluids, tissues, blood typing, microorganisms, screening, chemical analyses, cell counts etc. of the human body. They play an important role in collecting the information needed for treating most pathology cases by sampling, testing, analyzing and reporting such investigations.

Radiology and X-Ray technology: Radiographers take x-ray films of body parts used in diagnosing medical problems. They conduct the x-raying of the patient’s body, make the exposure, and then develop the x-ray film. Experienced radiologist can perform more complex imaging tests. A postgraduate radiologist normally interprets the x-rays.

Career in Hospital Management and Administration

Hospital administration has become one of the most lucrative careers in the fast growing field of health sector for graduates willing to serve the humanity. As health sector is booming day by day in the perspective of globalization the demand of hospital administrator has increased tremendously. Health Administration/Management is among the top ten millennium professions according to a recent US survey. A large number of private hospitals and clinics have come up all over the country. With increasing emphasis on quality of health care and patient satisfaction there is a tremendous need for persons with a professional qualification in Hospital Management. The healthcare concept in India has undergone a tremendous change in recent years. People have become increasingly aware of the importance of healthcare and this has led to higher expectations and an increased demand for a high quality of medical care and facilities.

Hospital administration is concerned with planning, organising, staffing, co-ordinating, controlling and evaluating health services for the community to provide maximum patient care of superior quality at low cost so as to reduce morbidity and mortality. Administration or management is a science and an art like medical sciences. Professional hospital administrators have proven how institutions can be managed efficiently, economically and effectively in a targeted time period.

Health care administration or hospital management provides management skills for the delivery of healthcare services. Doctors and medical specialists have so far been managing hospitals and health centers, without possessing the necessary managerial training. Moreover, it takes away precious time required by doctors to carry out their medical responsibilities. Therefore, of late most large and medium sized hospitals have specially trained professional hospital administrators with a management team responsible for the management of the healthcare services and medical staff, for planning and control, for continuous supply of materials, the management of the research and clinical work, and so on.

This is an exciting time for healthcare management. Healthcare is changing more rapidly than almost any other field. The field is changing in terms of how and where care is delivered, who is providing those services, and how that care is financed. Healthcare management requires talented people to manage the changes taking place. In their roles, healthcare executives have an opportunity to make a significant contribution to improving the health of the communities their organizations serve.

Nature of Work

The work of hospital administrators is challenging, responsible and difficult. Hospital administrators manage hospitals, outpatient clinics, hospices, and drug-abuse treatment centers. In large hospitals, there may be several administrators, one for each department. In smaller facilities, they oversee the day-to-day operations of all departments. Administrators make sure hospitals operate efficiently and provide adequate medical care to patients. They act as liaisons between governing boards, medical staff, and department heads and integrate the activities of all departments so they function as a whole. Administrators recruit, hire, and sometimes train doctors, nurses, interns, and assistant administrators. Administrators plan budgets and set rates for health services. In research hospitals, administrators develop and expand programs and services for scientific research and preventive medicine. In teaching hospitals, they aid in the education of new doctors. Administrators plan departmental activities, evaluate doctors and other hospital employees, create and maintain policies, help develop procedures for medical treatments, quality assurance, patient services, and public relations activities such as active participation in fund-raising and community health planning. Hospital administrators work long or irregular hours. Hospitals are open round the clock 24/7 and administrators may be called in at any hour to make decisions and resolve disputes. Administrators also attend staff meetings, participate in health planning councils, go to fund-raising events, and travel to professional association conventions. They need to keep up with advances in medicine, computerized diagnostic and treatment equipment, data processing technology, government regulations, health insurance changes, and financing options. While doctors strive to keep the blood flowing and the heart beating, the hospital administrator is doing his job in keeping the hospital alive and healthy.

The work of hospital managers, therefore, includes the recruitment and management of other staff, the maintenance of the hospital and of services other than medical services, accounts and finance, marketing and communications and security. Hospital managers work from the premises of the hospital and need to be physically present in the hospital complex. They need to walk around the hospital and monitor the different services. They also need to maintain good communications with the management and staff of all departments, doctors and medical specialists, para-medical staff, health workers, and ensure the well-being of all patients.

Besides an understanding of the functions of the different departments, hospital managers should be familiar with financial operations, personnel management, purchase of materials and storage, organizational development and patient care.

Personality

Anyone opting for a career in hospital administration should have a blend of some unique qualities like innovation, responsibility, self motivation & devotion towards humanity. To be a successful healthcare professional a person requires a service-oriented bent of mind, high emotional quotient and the ability to work for long hours. The sector also offers prospects of global recognition with medical tourism becoming more widespread. Service to man is service to God should be motto of a hospital administrator.

Because health services and medical managers are responsible for hundreds of employees and very expensive equipment and facilities, they must be able to make effective decisions, interpret data, and understand information systems and finance. Strong leadership skills are necessary to motivate and execute their decisions. Communication skills, diplomacy, flexibility, and tact are critical because of their constant interaction with people.

Pre-requisite

For making a career in Hospital Administration the individual may be from medical or non-medical background. Pre-requisite for career in hospital administration is graduation (medical/non-medical) and a degree/diploma in Hospital Administration.

Professional Courses

There are many courses available in the field of Hospital Administration for both medical and non-medical persons e.g. Bachelor of Hospital Administration (BHA) after 10+2/XII standard, Post Graduate Diploma in Hospital Administration (PGDHA) after graduation in any subject, Master of Hospital Administration (MHA) or MBA (Hospital Administration) after graduation in any field, as well as M Phil (Hospital Administration) after MHA.
