Selection Process
The UPSC Geo-Scientist selection process comprises three stages:
- Preliminary Examination:
The Combined Geo-Scientist (Preliminary) Examination is conducted in Objective Type Papers.
This stage aims to select candidates for Stage II.
The examination is worth 400 marks.
- Mains Examinations:
The Combined Geo-Scientist (Main) Examination consists of Conventional Type Papers.
Mains will be conducted for a total of 600 marks.
- Personality Test/Interview:
The Combined Geo-Scientist Interview carries a weightage of 200 marks.
Exam Pattern
Stage-I: Combined Geo-Scientist (Preliminary) Examination:
- For every incorrect response, a deduction of ⅓ marks is applied.
- Candidates’ marks in the Preliminary/Stage-I Examination will factor into their ultimate ranking.
- Stage 1 consists of three streams:-
Stream-I: Geologist & Scientist B (Hydrogeology)
Stream-II: Geophysicist and Scientist ‘B’ (Geophysics)
Stream-III: Chemist and Scientist ‘B’ (Chemical)

Stage-II: Combined Geo-Scientist (Main) Examination:
- The Combined Geo-Scientist (Main) Examination comprises three conventional type papers for each stream
- e. Stream-I: Geologist/ Stream-II: Geophysicist and Scientist ‘B’ (Geophysics)/ Stream-III: Chemist & Scientist ‘B’ (Chemical)/ Stream-IV: Scientist ‘B’ (Hydrogeology).
- These papers must be answered in English exclusively. The question papers will be provided in English only.
- Below is a breakdown of the detailed scheme for each of the four streams in Stage Two:
